No, I understand how GPS works, what I was wondering was how they sent the position data back to the user ... and my guess is via a low orbit platform. Those have been around for ages ... I know of one system used by USCG for emergencies where the transmitter turns on when it comes into contact with sea water and it sends out a beacon which is picked up by one of the low orbit sats which alerts the USCG and provides location information. Course, but location nonetheless.
