While Meerschaum falls under the category of clay, it’s not the same as the malleable material that gets baked that is used to make what we think of as clay pipes. Meerschaum must be carved and is very different. The new, separate thread makes a lot of sense.

I would probably argue that meerschaum pipes are related to clay pipes no more or less than briar pipes are related to wooden ones.

Sometimes you can read meerschaum is a sort of clay, and no, besides consisting both a certain amount of silicon compounds, it isn’t!

Austrian ‘coffee house’ clay?
Think they were freely available to clients in the old coffee houses, much the same way as clay Cutty’s used to handed out in the pubs over here.
Lot posher than the brits, the Austrians are. Lol

I had a small clay with the clay stem, no mouthpiece, for awhile. Didn't smoke it much, bowl too small and hated the clay stem. Just bought this one, perfect bowl dimensions with acrylic stem. Looking forward to it.
