I just branched out to pipes from cigars, loving it! I keep my gars in a humidor so I thought it was natural to do the same for my pipe blends. Is this common or is it overkill?C84C756F-F467-4A8F-8643-8B6CC4420A4D.jpeg

All depends on how tight the humidor is and how quickly you use the blend. I rarely remove a blend from the tin/bag as I burn it up rather quickly. Usually have no more than three or four blends in use.
Thanks warren! It’s a pretty tight humidor but it’s a glass top so it does radiate some humidity. I have about eight different blends, all very moist, in individual bags and they’re keeping quite nicely. I keep Boveda packs in there to regulate like my cigar humidor. I don’t burn through them too quickly because I have so many.

I couldn't upload it the way I wanted to, but attached is my pipe stand with a small glass "humidor" for my go to smoke.

The lid doesn't seal, but I haven't had an issue with drying out since I keep my most frequently used blend in it (and I typically just smoke on the weekends). Otherwise, I use Mason jars or tins (whether open or sealed). Others use mylar bags or some form of Tupperware.

Regardless, if it works for you, great. If not, stop. Either way, enjoy. I do like the clutter free look.

Thanks Amish Tyrant! Nice setup! I take a while to get around to some of my blends so I need to protect them. What I’m gathering is that it’s not overkill if it’s working for me. That’s good to know! This is a helpful bunch of people here, I appreciate that!

I am always glad when the tobacco dries up a little bit. But It depends on the stuff. Some tobacco is just to moist right of the tin, and is getting better. Some looses its aroma and is getting harsh. But usually it’s getting easier for me to stuff and keep it going, when it’s not as wet as a puddle.

My humble ABS humidor holds my small stock of cigars and two pouches that I've had for about two dozen years. The Condor was purchased on a business trip to the UK. I honestly don't know why I've elevated this pouch to memorial status. The Balkan Sobranie I understand. I actually smoked about half of that before putting it away. But, generally speaking, no. I use jars.

I’m having good luck with the 50ct humidor. I have two 5oz pouches in the bottom, five 1oz pouches top left and room for two tins top right, all different blends. It keeps everything moist which is good for me because I smoke mainly dark and moist blends but don’t want them ghosting over to my dryer fruity blends.

Yes, I thought so too. And as far as glass radiating humidity, Boveda 72s do a nice job of keeping them right.
Not sure how new you are, I'm about a year into pipes after about 25 into pipes. Pipe tobacco is a LOT dryer than cigars. They told me to dry it out a lot even microwave it for a few seconds until its just springy. I've quickly learned it's a lot different, no Bovedas no hygros just a mason jar.

I actually get a real good smoke without drying it. Drying tends to change the flavor a bit for me, which isn’t a problem, but I don’t bother because I’m getting good smoke all the way down the bowl with only an occasional relight.

Pipe tobacco doesn’t require the same level of humidity as cigars, and you’ll probably run the risk of developing mold.

Pipe tobacco is pretty resilient as far as moisture is concerned. If it does get a little too dry, rehydrating it is pretty easy. Pipe tobacco held by manufacturers is dried/hydrated several times during manufacture.

Cigars are a different animal. And while I don’t understand the dynamics, I have my Staebell humidor set at 64% humidity, and it usually holds around 63.5%.

My cigar humidor, a 100ct, holds from 65% to 69% depending on outside and house humidity. The 50ct that I put the pipe tobacco in is not as tight and holds at 55% to 60%. Probably because they both have glass tops. I haven’t had trouble with mold but most of my stuff is house blends in ziplock baggies, except for the tins, and I go through it pretty quickly. My cigars are all different brands and ring size but all of them smoke really good too. I usually smoke one of my pipes and follow it up with a cigar, so I go through them at an equal pace. I’ve been smoking cigars for a couple of years and pipes for a couple of months. Always eager to learn more about both. I’ll be watching for signs of mold though. If I develop any I’ll take out the Boveda and call it a wooden jar lol.
