A One Pipe Man....

I walked into a bar the other day.......anyway I got talking to a chap who was a long time ex pipe smoker.....in over thirty years of piping he only ever had one pipe at a time!

I guess most on here have a bit pipe acquisition disorder but is there anyone on the forum who follows this practice?

That used to be me, but then I decided to separate aromatics from non-aromatics. So just two pipes for me. But then, I was gifted three others, which I wouldn't have voluntarily obtained otherwise. So now I have five, and that's quite enough for me.

I like looking at pipes, but I'm far too broke to have PAD. TAD is my game instead! ?

No, can't say I have. I 've seen some old timers come in to the local shop and you could tell they only had one pipe. They wanted to get the owner to drill the carbon cake out so they could get tobacco in the pipe.

I use corn pipes for a few aromatics that I smoke. For example I use MM General pipes, for Condor, Amphora Full, St. Bruno, one aromatics for each pipe. Mixing everything in one pipe, I would make a salad of aromas, and I think I would be very angry.

I have to see if I can find it but @pipestud has this great story about tíos well known football coach who smoke a single pipe. The story is great, and if you know Steve, the way he tells it just makes it all better. I will share if I can find it. It may be on his blog.

I used to have to daily check in on a gentleman, RIP, who was a one pipe, one tobacco guy. But, I'd rather have variety in my life.

We get some that think it's more macho to say that they only have one pipe, one tobacco, just a tool. They also think it's some sort of badge of honor to only have one shirt, one pair of pants, and one pair of underwear. YMMV

Apparently, my Great-Grandfather only had one pipe for most of his life. But that trait did not pass to my Grandfather, Father, or me!

As I've retold many times, my dad smoked from age 15 to 65 and only owned one pipe at a time. He might have had one other burnt out pipe as a back-up, but it was essentially one pipe at a time. Those were the days when you could get standard grade tobacco pipes at the newsstands in big cities. He smoked pretty much from just after breakfast to bedtime.

Children don't have a great sense of time, so I can't be sure, but it seemed most of his pipes lasted about a year. Also, he smoked only Granger from the foil pouch. On the rare occasion when someone gifted him with a tub of Granger, he'd fill old foil pouches from the tub.

He quit pipe smoking, and all smoking, when he turned 65 to take a job at a non-smoking campus to run their computer lab. He lived well into his 89th year licensed to drive without glasses.

As a naval officer during WW II, he served on minesweepers in the Philippines and was eventually the skipper of a 'sweep. He took his pipe to sea, smoking when the smoking lamp was lit.

Later I served as an enlisted radioman on a minesweeper during the Vietnam War, and I joked with him that we were a minesweeping dynasty. He served on, and skippered, the old YMS ships, and I served aboard the USS Gallant MSO 489.

I only had one pipe for the first decade of my pipe smoking, in fact the thought that people would have more than one never occurred to me… I then met @mortonbriar who gave me a cob and a nose warmer briar (and an orange brylon pipe but that doesn’t really count I guess) and introduced me to these forums. I now have more than one.

I think everyone started out with one pipe at some time.
There are too many great shapes finishes and makers to limit my horizons, but I have cut back quite a bit----down to 3 pots, 3 apples and a bulldog.
That bulldog looks lonely

I pretend I only have one pipe, sometimes for a week or even a month...then I pick another one off the rack.
