So I've been pipe smoking for a few weeks now and I last week bought a savinelli pipe which i love. As it's new ive been going by the rules of only smoking it every 24-48 hours. I've also been cleaning it with a pipe cleaner after each smoke. What ive noticed is that despite pushing a pipe cleaner through till it runs clean I'm still getting a bitter taste after about half a bowl. its like the condensation tastes foul and i can see a yellowish liquid gathering at the very tip of the bit. Is this because I haven't done an alcohol clean yet? Hope that's not a too stupid question!

Marketing and old wives tales. Keep a pipe clean and you can smoke it as often as you like.

Are you cleaning out the mortise? Tobacco and oils can settle there and go rancid. Also sounds like you're smoking the pipe too hot with overly moist tobacco.

Sounds like you're smoking your tobacco too wet and too fast.

Dry it longer, pack it lighter, and smoke it slower. And if you need, you can always run a pipe cleaner through a couple of times while you're smoking.
I think it might be a contributing factor. The one i just smoked was a brand new tin. Thanks for the advice!

The mortis was filthy. I used several pipe cleaners on it. Hopefully that should do the trick. Thanks for the advice.

My Grandfather once said, when I asked him about pipe rotation: The only people who benefit from that are the pipe sellers. The advice the others have offered is sound: dry the tobacco more, smoke a bit slower, and keep the mortise and tenon clean.

Also, I've never smoked a Savinelli, but when I got my new Peterson it tasted weird...I rubbed out all the bowl coating, and when I did, some of the stain came off on the paper towel(inside the bowl). The first time I cleaned the reservoir chamber, the tissue also came out reddish. I imagine they dip stained it, but I don't know. All I know is that it affected the tobacco flavour for a few smokes.

That's why I take my pipe apart frequently. I notice harshness when I notice sign of moisture. You can run pipe cleaner all the way to the chamber, but unless you take the pipe apart, you won't be able to clean the mortise.

As it's a Savinelli and because I see you're from the UK, there's a big chance that your pipe is drilled for a filter (the tenon is mortise are larger in order to accommodate a filter). If you are not using one (which is OK), some nasty liquids can accumulate in that part. You can try to get an adaptor in that case. As mentioned, slowing you cadence and puffing more gently will do the trick.

pipe tobacco moisture is proper for shipping not smoking. Now how much less dry then that you want it depends on your taste. I prefer super dry crunchy in fact. If you're getting liquid coming out it's not how you clean it. And as far as resting a pipe cleaning it seems more important. And if a pipe is too dirty and sour it will taste like that from the start not in the middle. Experiment to find what level of dryness works for you and also slowing down helps with excessive moisture and heat. When we say slow I mean sip more then puff. puffing is for a pipe that's close to going out not for general smoking (if you literally stick it in your mouth something will cause some smoke to draw in your mouth, try it as an experiment that should give you an idea of how much less you need to pull on the smoke then it would seem like you have to). At the end of the day these are all just suggestions but trying them should help you find a way to not get gross stuff happening with your smokes.
Oh and pipes they're fancy because there are so many tiny little things to learn to really enjoy it. IT's not like a cig which a chimp could get right on their first go around.
