I remember the highway bridge disaster in Italy. Years ago, everyone was reporting that the bridge was moving, until it collapsed. A truck driver neighboring my building, told me the same thing when he was passing by with his truck. A month after passing over it, it collapsed. A miracle. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured and no serious after-effects.............

Yes, I understand that all bridges of whatever construction have to be maintained.

Still want to know the material! I am betting concrete piers.
Over time, all materials are subject to stress and strain. Plus, these structures have to accommodate such issues as weather, settling /shifting, etc.. It's not feasible to build them to last forever. Ongoing monitoring, evaluation, maintenance and replacement are necessary. The catastrophic failure isn't necessarily due to faulty material or design. But it also could be. How old was that bridge?
