I've been kicking around a design idea in my head to carve a man with a pipe, but without the pipe being a separate piece. I think I've got it figured out, I just have to actually sit down and carve it. Pretty covered up in owl carvings at the moment.

It's so much easier to do the pipe separately. It's small and thin and I'd guarantee you that I'd break it if it was integral in the carving.

That's a good point. I still want to give it a shot and see if I can pull it off. If not, it won't be the first or last carving of mine to hit the burn pile. ?

What tools do you use? I currently have an OCC tools 1 3/4" detail knife and a 1/4" Drake V tool. Looking into picking up a set of the dockyard tools micro gouges here soon for finer detailing.

I'm a big fan of the OCC Tools knives. 95% of my carving is done with a 1 7/8" roughing knife and a 1" detail knife. A V tool once in a while, but even beards and hair can be done with a knife and quite honestly, I prefer to do it that way.

Oh, and you're not alone in creating kindling wood on a regular basis...I've always found it hard to put the wood back on after I've made a horribly wrong cut ?
