It's so much easier to do the pipe separately. It's small and thin and I'd guarantee you that I'd break it if it was integral in the carving.I've been kicking around a design idea in my head to carve a man with a pipe, but without the pipe being a separate piece. I think I've got it figured out, I just have to actually sit down and carve it. Pretty covered up in owl carvings at the moment.
That's a good point. I still want to give it a shot and see if I can pull it off. If not, it won't be the first or last carving of mine to hit the burn pile. ?It's so much easier to do the pipe separately. I'm a big fan of the OCC Tools knives. 95% of my carving is done with a 1 7/8" roughing knife and a 1" detail knife. A V tool once in a while, but even beards and hair can be done with a knife and quite honestly, I prefer to do it that way. What tools do you use?
Please share. I've been fascinated with wildlife carving for years now but never took the plunge.Pretty covered up in owl carvings at the moment.
@solideogloria86 ... Are these available for purchase? These are very cartoony. I was trying to come up with a Christmas ornament design that would sale. I used Doug Linkers owl as a starting point and made a few modifications.

I'd like to see what you come up with.I love your take on Doug's owls. I'll have to try a few with some mods.
