Seller sent Royal Mail a chaser mail, but the pipe is considered lost.
A full refund was forwarded at once. Hats off to this most helpful the seller ; nevertheless it gives me a heartache.

I’m sorry to hear it.

Your Dunhill lived through the Cultural Revolution, the Six Day War, the first Moon landing, the Vietnam War, Watergate, bell bottom pants, the Iranian Revolution, the AIDS epidemic, the Challenger disaster, the fall of the Soviet Union, the Maastricht Treaty, 9/11, a few wars in the Middle East, the rise of the FANG companies, the usual assortment of catastrophic economic crises, and Covid. All trivial (except maybe the bell bottom pants) compared to the dangers of being put in a box and subjected to the whims of the Royal Mail.

Thank you Jon ! Yes, life is a wonderful source of irony ; in 2009 a love letter posted during WW Two was delivered at its destination 64 years late . So, miracles do happen and my hope is not yet lost.
Bell bottom pants are imho not to be trifled with !

I admire your optimism. The pipe may arrive in 64 years, but will you be there to receive it? ?

You have my condolences. Somewhere itn south Battersea, it is being smoked by a member of the Royal mail while he works in his tiny allotment, right before he trips on an edging brick and is impaled on his pitchfork.

This one might be British. I was lucky to nab a "Surgrug" off eBay recently. It's a Surbrug Special but it has no other markings or stamps to indicate its origin. I know Delacour and a few others made pipes for Surbrug. The grain is quite nice and the pipe is fairly large. I wondered whether the stinger might be of help identifying it but I can't be sure it's original to the pipe.

I did this one for forum member Jon Guss, same nomenclature, no stinger.

I saw that earlier! I wonder if the shape number was any help identifying the maker. I haven't even got a shape number on mine, though the other stamps are identical.

This went over my estimate. One is a early Republic era 9BC Sterling (shape number not shown in the picture). The button looks pretty rough.

What's more shocking to me was when I clicked on your link and saw someone trying to sell a used Peterson 150th edition Founder's pipe for $688. I have one which I love and purchased unused for around $150 a few years ago.

I snagged this set. I don’t have pre-republic Made in Ireland (in a circle) 9BC. So the juice is worth the squeeze.

Nice grain, but I moved back from bidding in the last seconds.
There's quite some rim damage and I suspect the stem to be a replacement.

What makes this pipe so special ?

Rolando, I think the value lies not in the pipe per se but in its association with Hardy's, a world famous seller of fishing tackle (for a brief history of the firm see: Hardy - A Short History - https://www.hardyfishing.com/pages/hardy-history). My guess is that the buyer was an angler who wants it for the Hardy name, whether or not they happen to be a pipe smoker.

As for the pipe, it was made by John Higgins & Co. I discussed Higgins and his company a few times over the last five years, most recently in a post last month (see: Please Help ID this Old Clay. :: Pipe Talk - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/please-help-id-this-old-clay.85176/#post-36400115).
