Sharrow Philtpads

Well I ordered myself some narrow shitpads or whatever they're called.

It'll be an interesting experience/experiment if nothing else. They're cheap enough so why not?

So do you leave them in the pipe until ... they turn black as stated above, until the taste goes rank, until you change blends, some other period of time? Just curious if there’s a recommended usage or just whatever you want? Serious inquiry, not a snarky comment on my part, I’m curious. I’ve considered some other options for a pipe that smokes wet but was worried I’d just be packing the bottom of the pipe with something other than tobacco every single time and dumping it all out at the end of the smoke. Seems a hassle but if they are just allowed to dry out and be reused ... is that a messy fiddly proposition?

I was interested in trying a Philtpads but as @hoosierpipeguy mentions the shipping from England is crazy for just a single package.
Thanks for this heads up on the meerschaum variety at meerschaum-market, I went ahead and ordered a package of these to try in my meers.

Only £8 if memory serves, very reasonable I thought. They sold them to go with their clays, so only any good for pipes 4-41/2" long. Although they will take a larger 'army mount' pipe easily enough.

I ordered the ones from meerschaum market and they should be here on Monday. Now I just have to figure out which way they go in the bowl.

@pappymac - Imagine you have a orange or some other round type of fruit that you have cut in half. Well a Philt Pad looks just like that after you have cut said fruit in half. The Philt Pad goes into the pipe with the flat side face up and the curved side facing downwards and the same applies to the Meerschaum Market fellows..

Thanks for the tip...gonna try these in my Altinay Lumberman. My first Altinay has a perfect draw without a filter...but the Lumberman is a bit too open. My theory is it may be due to the very short stem compared with the first one. And it has a huge chamber, so it'll be interesting to see how it does with these things.

@Dan I remember that your front room was modeled after a Medieval Great Hall since you posted a picture of a rather interesting toilet paper dispenser on here. I suppose we can thank our lucky stars that you are a fan of the Medieval period and not WW2 as you might have constructed a replica of the Fuhrer Bunker in Berlin!

Whenever I need a shitpad, I always opt for the widest I can get. If things are desperate enough that they’re needed, I don’t want to have to aim to hit a narrow one. YMMV

Oh I love it when two English fellows (or is it Brits?) go on with each other. We have quite a few friends from both London and Manchester here in the States and when they’re with us, their talk is as plain as any Americans; but get two of them in a room together and you would swear you are listening to a different language being spoken (especially if they’re politely discussing football). Brilliant!
