Beginning the new year with a new boomstick!

I've had the younger, shorter brother (K31) for some time, but have always wanted an old school full length variant.

Behold the Swiss 1896/11 Schmidt-Rubin Straight Pull Rifle in 7.5x55. This one is 111 years old with about 90% original finish remaining.

I mean absolutely pristine.

They’ve never been fired and only dropped once.

Why is this rifle significant?

It's a relic of old world craftsmanship. In the grand scheme of things, no big deal, but if you are into this sort of thing, it's as interesting as a pipe or car from a similar time, in this case 1910.

In an era of cast metal in plastic furniture, a century old item of forged and machined parts in a nice piece of wood, especially from a country known for their precision, is a joy to behold.

And functional. The smoothest trigger of any surplus rifle I've ever held. (based on my K-31) Stupid accurate. Able to adjust someone's attitude out to 800 meters easily.

To shoot accurately to 800 yds. is no small achievement. But without a scope?

Maybe I was a bit cavalier in adding "easily" to that statement.

A shooter on the surplus rifle forum regularly rings steel at that range with that rifle.

I am less accomplished and am good for half that distance. But the rifle has no problem doing it.

Just another trinket for my wife to sell at a loss after my demise, along with the tobacco cellar...

But I’m guessing also corrosive!

and I live in Iowa I can’t name 1 place where you could see for 800 yards.

and hitting steel at that range can be a sort of parlor trick. Once you’ve missed it 1000x and figure out the correct holdover and aiming point it’s usually just lining up the same every time after that.

I’d like to see 800 yard performance on a newly acquired target ?

GP11 is Berdan primed, brass cased and non corrosive. Partly why so many of the Swiss relics still have pristine bores.

This is the first time I've enjoyed talking about guns.

When the gun crew on the forum get going it seems more about the doodads than the substance of their daily carry, which in in my mind is an obscenity given that there's no need for a lethal weapon given the safety of the daily environment. Seems more an
excuse to strut about like a turkey than anything else.

I know I know. 2nd Amendment, etc.,etc., and you're going to do what you damn well please, and more power to you.

But the rifle at the heart of this thread can be liked for its history, accuracy and masterful production that even an anti-gun nut like me can appreciate.

Yeah. Most people fire the GP11 when they can find it and then buy the PPU for the decent boxer brass.

In addition to my admiration of the "old world" craftsmanship of the bolt action era, I am also a combat veteran.

I have been to places where the populace is disarmed. The bumper sticker comes to mind.
