I don't think the spoon is a big deal either way. I cut them and on any cob that doesn't come with a plug bottom, I bore out on the press and put a plug in.

Reaming a cob sounds a lot like... refilling a Bic lighter, patching a plastic bag, washing a coffee filter, or cleaning a used tampon. Just throw it away and get a new one.

That’s mostly just loose ash I had just dumped the bowl.
All mine are the same like @BROBS said. I’ve never had one burn away and the gaps are all filled in with ash and tar. In fact when I get a new one, before dumping the dottle out I take a pipe nail and pack as much ash as possible into the gaps.
Seems to me that “cob etiquette” is a bit of an overkill

Cobs are "old school",(a term that is usually dismissive of anything that was not invented after you young twerps were born). People used matches or embers back then to light their pipes. Get with the damn program and your cobs will last for decades!

I’ve had two where I burnt them so bad the shank popped out. But they were just Missouri prides ie the cheapest non mini cob they sell. I just glued the shank it worked fine after that.
