The Pipes Magazine Radio Show – Episode 186

Kevin Godbee
Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We broadcast weekly, every Tuesday at 8 pm eastern USA time and are available on nearly all podcast sites and apps. Listen on your computer, tablet, phone and even in the car! Our Featured Interview tonight is with Thom Provost. Tom is known on the Pipes Magazine Forums as Theediabeticman. Obviously, by his forum handle, he is a diabetic just like Brian’s daughter, Samantha. Each year we do a fundraiser for the JDRF, and auction off some pipes and tobaccos. That’s one tie-in for having Tom on the show. The other is that he is also a member of the YouTube Pipe Community, and recently made a long post about it, which was partly inspired by the sometimes splintered pipe cliques. As you may have guessed, if you didn’t see it, the thread ended up having to be closed. We are breaking format and having Tom on for the entire show. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Tonight’s show is sponsored by Sutliff-Tobacco.com, SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, 4noggins.com, Cornell & Diehl, and Savinelli Pipes and Tobaccos. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 1-hour show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes and other podcast sites and apps after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • A lot of content. Kept me listening.
I think that pipe smoking has made me more patient and maybe that it is a form of meditation.
I’ve immersed myself in pipes and tobacco the last two years via the internet and only started so that I could smoke w/o paper.
First I got a cob to go with my bulk “ryo/pipe tobacco”, then I found pipes magazine forum, and the YTPC.
As for the forums and Y T P C responses to Thom’s lengthy ‘new subject’ post on pipesmagazine,
I find it amazing how much emotion can be generated with simple key strokes and anything less than unconditional love.
I guess I’m not really into how these things work these days. Instant emotion w/o due diligence. or, “Trumped” up view clicks.
Clever way to get your show written, however, and it was absolutely riveting.
I chuckled when mention of multiple fishing vests was made.
I actually picked one up this year at the local thrift shop just for use as a pipe gear transporter. It’s got way too many pockets for me to use efficiently.

  • Another good show as usual. Don’t know what the fuss on the forum was all about because I didn’t read that thread. After listening to this episode, I still don’t know what the fuss was about. Maybe I just can’t see it through the cloud of beautiful white smoke coming from my $3.00 street fair found Savinelli Giubileo d’Oro.
Royal Yacht? The finest tobacco every aged in the bilge of an old coal-fueled steam ship.

  • Nice interview! Awesome show! For me, the longer the interview, the better! Great stories. One question, didn’t YABO always meant Yet Another Box Opening? This acronym started when thousands of youtubers did (and still do) ‘box opening’ reviews of the same stuff, either their newest phone, new laptop, etc. Now, in this new context, it’s much better used as the box opening in a YTPC YABO is a unique thing demonstrating the brotherhood of the pipe community. That’s what I call redeeming of a ‘term’! Thanks again Brian and Kevin!
