i am now on only the 5th bowl of my new pipe and i thought about something to help keep the bottom dryer while trying to break it in
i will try putting dry tobacco in the bottom and then fill the rest up with regular

maybe even put the dry dottle from previous bowls in the bottom
i left some perfectly good tobacco laid out in the open to dry - for testing

p s - i am still waiting for a video of you smoking that special pipe that has the brass keys on it - your oldest pipe

the first trial bowl

i did not smoke it to the bottom and i dumped about as much dottle as the amount of dry tobacco that i put in ( about a quarter of an inch )

it was a little bit past damp but not quite wet -
i would say that is at least a 50 percent reduction in moisture

the dry tobacco had only stayed out and dried for about an hour ( this is florida and we have had the windows open for the last week so it is plenty humid )
second trial bowl

i smoked it almost all the way down and there was only a little dottle left about half of what was left the last time and the dry tobacco was quite a bit drier
that time the bottom was only damp
third trial

the tobacco was much drier ( sat out all night ) and i put more of it in the bottom ( about a third of an inch deep )

i smoked that bowl all the way down and when i got done - it was almost dry - it was less than damp - you could barely tell any was there
the next two bowls i did not smoke all the way down and they were only a little damp
out of all these bowls i only had a couple of gurgles that cleared up by themselves
i smoked my only 3 - capt black - half and half - prince albert
i would say that putting a bit of dry tobacco in the bottom, at the very least, cuts down more than 50 percent of the moisture and makes it easier to smoke closer to the bottom
of course the amount that you put and how dry it is will make a substantial difference
looking at my full ashtray - i don't see enough dottle in there to worry about - it's almost completely all ashes - a huge difference from before when it seemed like time after time it was more than a quarter full of dottle

just finished next bowl
smoked all the way down

it was the coolest, tastiest, smoothest bowl i have ever smoked yet

almost no moisture at the bottom - only a small portion about the size of the end of a pencil eraser was dark but not even damp - a light coat of ash covered it easily with no soak through
i say it works pretty well

i know i am getting better at smoking slow and cool so that is part of it - i noticed that it helps to pay very close attention to the heat of the bowl and when it gets hot - i slow down etc .
however, before i started putting dry tobacco in - i always had a bunch of moisture build up at the end and a lot more trouble smoking when it got down to there, almost never smoking to the bottom and big trouble if i did
so far i have smoked every bowl farther and easier and two of them all the way with little trouble

@ mlyvers
thanks for the suggestion

seems like the tobacco burns a little too fast and too hot for me when it is dry

i haven't learned how to slow down much yet but i am getting there

next bowl

smoked all the way down to the bottom with no trouble

only a little bit of dampness at the very bottom but not wet

and no wasted tobacco - zero

i am having much less trouble with tongue bite
you guys were right - this is easy

just pack - light - puff

that is all there is too it hahaha
only it took me over a year to figure that out

thanks for all the advice on this forum !
