DeBlasio (aka Wilhelm) has been a bit of a disappointment. I am not discussing politics, just this one proposed rule. NYC smokers should protest.

It's a wrong policy, but at least--for now--they're going about it the right away. They're just going to pressure the landlords to ban it themselves. If that's the case then nothing changes. People can just "vote with their feet".
If New Yorkers are so worried about air quality, they're living in the wrong town.

DeBlasio is not doing anything surprising. I seriously doubt many NYC voters are shocked, care or will react with anything other than a bit of vocal outrage, and very little of that. The serious money he needs smoke in their owned residences and will not be remotely affected so neither will his aspirations. Most others will simply ignore the mayor's wishes and whatever laws finally come into force.
And, no one alive today need express outrage when, in the not so distant future, smoking laws become even more draconian. I suspect that, I am being a bit facetious here, you won't be allowed to smoke unless your home is only occupied by you and located in the center of five unoccupied acres which the smoker must own outright. No liens. Banks would not want smokers stinking up a property which they may have to seize and then foot the bill for renovating prior to resale. I'm sure the SPCA would demand that if you owned pets that smoking would be banned as the cats and dogs have to suffer in silence.

I know these are not rent controlled or HUD owned properties the mayor is referring to, but if they were I would be all for it! Privileges come with being an adult and paying your own way, not in having the public pay it for you.
Otherwise I agree with what Warren said.

With the density of population and the hazards presented, it's obvious, NYC must ban ... cooking.

Do not feel left out Perique. This attitude will creep south as this generation and the next return to the south with their degrees from "those up North schools." Then there are all of those "snow birds" with their Bermudas up around their chins and black socks. A lot of them go south to die and linger for a few years which allows them to vote.
You'll be wishing for Sherman's return just so you smell the smoke in the air.

My abject apologies. And, I do know better!
In all honesty and in spite of my generally perceived negative attitude, I do think that the pendulum will start to swing the other way, back towards individual responsibility. I just hope it doesn't take too many generations. I won't be around to see. On the other hand I won't live long enough to see the extreme of the currant swing either and will not experience the worst of it.
I did have high hopes of leaving the world a better place for my kid and the grandson. A failure on my part to be sure.

They are trying to get rid of smoking basically everywhere. It's crazy how much has changed in 10 years.

Mr. Warren: no worries, Sir. And it's not your fault, any more than it is all of our faults. We got soft. We let them in. And by doing so, we failed the next generations. Monumentally.
Pipestoday: don't let them in. The entryists. The smoking issue is just a Trojan horse for all the rest. The key is to not let them in. Even when the initial positions and sound "reasonable" to the gentleman. Don't let them in.
The good news is that, while the "millennials" are lost, the subsequent generations will push the pendulum back. Militantly. Sadly, they will hold us in low esteem.

Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.
