I know there have been a couple of posts with pictures of military personnel smoking pipes. Couldn't find them, so I just thought I'd post this separately.
This is a colorized picture of Civil War soldiers taking a break. Six of the nine have pipes.

Worth pointing out that there's a great book by Ben Rapaport about pipe smoking and the Civil War. It was put out a year or so ago by Gary Schrier's Briar Books.

In the color photo, the man in the right foreground is George Armstrong Custer.
Ha! It sure is! I've seen that photo countless times now, and I've never realized it until you mentioned it. I never noticed the dog somehow either.

Cheetah's first photo is of Custer and his officers. Bonus point's for the fist one to identify the General. No cheating!

This gentleman is in our local pipe club (his father owns the shop). He's working on his doctorate in History/Civil War. His dad posted this a few days ago on the club page, a real bright young man.

It's not McClellan......maybe Barnard or Pleasonton. So many levels of generals in the Civil War.

A good while back a bunch of Forum Members bought a book which I believe was Titiled Smoking and Tobbaco between the Blue and the Gray, nice book, 65$ but worth it.

I remember a posting a while back about a Confederate Officer with a very impressive meerschaum pipe and the story of his captivity and how well his pipe was treated during his internment in a Union prison.
