we all know the oldies. does anyone here know any of "todays" celebs who smoke pipes? I only know of Michael Gladis from Mad Men. It would be interesting to know. The more famous the better.

In THERE WILL BE BLOOD there are several scenes with him sitting at a table that has a big jar full of pipes. Plus hes smoking several throughout the movie.

James Hampton played the part of Jerry Woolridge in Slingblade (1996). He smoked a pipe several times throughout the movie. He was the director of the mental hospital that Carl lived at before being released.

victoria beckham eh. thats crazy. kevin stick with the mad men theme and see if that British guy Jared Harris (plays Pryce) smokes a pipe in real life.

Daniel Day Lewis would be UNREAL though.

I don't know if Mr. Potatohead counts but he made a commercial for the last Superbowl with his misses.

Michael Gladis said that Jared Harris does not smoke a pipe in real life, but I could check and make sure.

I was thinking of Daniel Day Lewis as a possibility. I would have to catch him when he is in the USA. It seems he has homes in the US & UK.

The Lisa Bonet and Victoria Beckham pipe smoking references are dated, and I doubt they are currently active pipe smokers.

Plus, I would be too distracted doing an interview with Victoria Beckham.

Seriously though, to do an interview like I did with Michael Gladis is an IMMENSE investment in time and money, which is why I haven't done another one yet.

It was a huge amount of work, and in that case, Mad Men is a show I watched religiously and knew very, very well. I even watched the DVDs after the show was over so I have seen many episodes more than once.

Even with that expertise, this is still what was involved:

    1. Pre-interview -

    - Contact agent and make the pitch for the interview.
    - Scout a location where we can film and smoke. Get approval for its use.
    - Read and watch several other interviews to see what has been talked about before.
    - Research their background, biography, past projects, current projects, future projects.
    - Write questions, revise questions, anticipate answers, write the script and direction for the interview.
    - Practice in front of the mirror and memorize your lines

    2. Travel arrangements -

    - Flights and hotel for myself and professional film guy
    - Transportation of lighting and other film equipment
    - Arrange other interviews to amortize the trip (Nat Sherman & Davidoff)

    3. Arrival -

    - Arrive a day early for set up
    - Check location in person, arrange the room
    - Set up lighting and sound
    - Practice in front of the camera without script in front of me

    4. Interview -

    - Try to do a good job and make it look easy and natural.

    5. Post interview -

    - Make back ups to 3 different external drives
    - Contact AMC to request footage not yet out on DVD
    - Review raw footage and make notes for editing
    - Editing
    - Re-Editing
    - Publish on website
    - Promote it by emailing fan club sites and such

    Hours: 300 man-hours between 2 guys
Dollar costs: $10,000 (including travel, hotel, meals, filming and video editing)
Producing a great interview with a real celebrity pipe smoker: Priceless

That was a ton of work for a show that I am a big fan of.

Now, since I haven't seen any of Daniel Day Lewis' movies except My Left Foot like 20 years ago, add more hours for watching stuff, getting familiar with him and thinking of topics to talk about.

I really enjoyed your Michael Gladis interview. I watched all four seasons of Mad Men in the past two months and became obsessed. I was always thinking of pipe smoking in the past year but Mad Men and Michael's character made me get off my ass and go buy a pipe. That interview brought me to this website/forum too. good on you for all that work and effort. It was definately cool.

Daniel Day Lewis is huge. Having said that he would be difficult. He comes across as a bit of a shy recluse kind of guy. But you need to watch his movies man. Hes amazing. Must watch the following:

    1. There Will Be Blood
    2. Gangs of New York
    3. In The Name of the Father
    4. Last of the Mohicans
    5. The Boxer

Didn't Jarred Harris smoke a pipe in Benjerman Button (as the tug boat captain)

I'm with wolfscout on this one. If you want to interview Charliez Theron for instance, I'd be more than happy to do an advance interview for you Kevin (on your dime of course) I don't think she smokes at all, but who really cares?

I am a huge fan of ‘the Culinary Quaffer’ Baron Ambrosia, host of food show ‘Bronx Flavor’. I initially started watching his first show Underbelly when it was only online after seeing the logo of him smoking a pipe (my avatar). Very seldom have I seen him NOT smoking a pipe. Although he is ‘pretty New York local’ I am pretty sure I am not the only person who would love to read a Pipes Magazine interview where he just talks about his pipe smoking/collecting.

Chris Wolstenholme is a musician and the bassist and backing vocalist for the rock band Muse. He also sometimes plays Banjo or keyboard instead of bass.

I just watched A movie Tim Holt as the stagecoach kid,,,in it he smoked A pipe. I trided to find A picture of him smoking couldn't find one. Below is part of his bio I did find.

In 5th Ave Girl (1939) with Ginger Rogers Tim was seen onscreen with a pipe for this first time. He smoked pipes from an early age and had an impressive collection. He was often photographed with a pipe in family pictures. While living in Pacific Palisades with Virginia and son Lance, born in 1940; the family had a pet German Shepard named "Tell" a descendent of the famous silent film star Strongheart the Dog. The Holts also had a small ranch in the San Fernando valley.

looks like a smooth and rounded sort of bulldog. If it is a brand I have no idea which. (it could be a prop, but there's a decent chance it isn't)

Probably the hottest looking pipe smoker in acting.

If you can't pack it, light it, and smoke it then why do it. It's a dieing art that must be rekindled in all of us as fortold by our forefathers.

Just watched an interesting film last night, "A Dangerous Method", directed by David Cronenberg. It stars Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung. The film is about the relationship between the two and their eventual differing philosophies about psychiatric treatment. Also starring is Keira Knightley as their mutual patient. Jung eventually has an affair with her, leading to much complexities. It's a beautifully filmed, well acted period piece definitely worth a viewing.

Mortensen (Freud) is seen smoking cigars throughout the picture, and Fassbender (Jung) smokes a pipe in several scenes. He also tamps, cleans and fills the pipe. Numerous pipes in racks are visible on his desk and his surrounds. The detail in this film is fascinating.

I've searched for a photo still showing Fassbender with his pipe, but to no avail. Guess you'll just have to rent it or Netflix it.

Caution: This film is rated R. Lots of frank sexual language and scenes, typical of Freud. Probably not good for the little ones. Also, the dialog is intricate and complex at times. And the story developes slowly, requiring patience.

This is really interesting to see. I am shocked to see MJ with a pipe!

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am The Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

Comic Book Artist Geof Darrow is a pipe smoker as well -- He worked on designing the machines for "The Matrix" and worked with Frank Miller to produce the art for the critically acclaimed "Hard Boiled". On "The Matrix" DVD special features they make mention of his pipe smoking a few times.
