3000+ USD. The biscuit was part of a lot which included the medal and other Fletcher items from the same period. The biscuit itself was appraised in the neighborhood of 800 Pounds.
If I found myself tempted by this biscuit, I'd send several kids to summer camp instead. I'm not a do-gooder, but I'd go quite a ways to avoid spending $1,500 on a biscuit, I don't care who refused to eat it.
I hope someone buys this to donate to a maritime museum for a tax deduction. The museum could display it according as a curiosity for the whimsy of its visitors. The idea of some wealthy person, let alone some not wealthy person, buying this for a glass case in their parlor is too sad to consider. Talk about crumby decor.
No difference than a pipe collector paying more than you think is right for a pipe. I'm a believer that one should spend their moneys as they alone see fit. My small collection of certain antiques was not started to benefit others. I buy them because I find them interesting, useful for research, and ... I can.
