What a great and generous gift. I have a real penchant for mixed finishes on briar. I think it is such a sophisticated approach, and such a test of a pipe carver or designer. In this case, the pipe maker has done a superb job of using the two finishes in a extraordinarily elegant way, balanced and harmonious, using the diagonal line and curve of the pipe to strike an dynamic chord. Just first rate. Gift pipes are indeed wonderful possessions. I never smoke one of mine without thinking of the person who gave it to me.
