Mostly the string comes with high-end pipes, hence I assume it is supposed to be a classy way

of showing that the pipe is pristine. Supposedly it lessens the chances that someone has stuck it

in his mouth to see how he looks with it. I've never seen them used to hang up the pipe.

I think it looks cool. I impress easy.
When I receive a pipe wrapped in bubble wrap, I un-wrap it and think nothing of it.
When I receive a pipe from Pipes and Cigars dot com, in their trade mark pipe box, in a pipe sock, I remember it, and will order from them again.
4noggins goes one better, I always find a few sample bags of tobacco in the pipe box.
When I am looking for a new or new to me pipe, the above two stores get my attention first.
Yes, I do like the "string-through-the-pipe" gimmick.

That double bowl pipe is cool. I could put McClelland Pastry in one bowl,Molto Dolce in the other and smoke some MoPastry.
If it works for you then go for it!
