Yo deu - interesting question. I use the Noah model, not just with factory pipes but also artisan ware, in order to more closely assess some of my tobacco blends. I work on the premise that the chamber geometry and engineering as well as briar affect the taste and smoking experience of some genres. Some of my VAs as well as lighter Lats are downright finicky with the pipes they prefer to inhabit.
Some of my pairs are: Quagliata bent billiards, Pietenpauw bent Rhodesian, GBD (and variants) 9438, Dunhill (and variants like Savory) Princes, Sebastian Beo Rhodesians, Kaywoodie Contest pipes (several vintages;, an interesting Stanwell small bulldog set - one is beech, so this is not strictly a mate, even though the shape and size are identical; Ropp cherrywood, Parker bulldogs, Tsuge Rhodesians, a few Dunnie billiards - different vintages though bowl size/shapes are identical. I would have to check my spreadsheets more closely, because I dimly recall some Pipes by Lee and others that have mates.
Anyhow, one conclusion: it is amazing to me how otherwise identical pipes do NOT deliver the same puffing experience. Obvious parameters like chamber diameter and size do ballpark the flavor profile, but there are discernible differences; even when I run the same sequence of blends to try to normalize the blend history of each pipe.

The factory pipe I'd buy in another version is the Savinelli 404 zulu/yacht, except I'm afraid that would make me smoke less the 35-year-plus-old unfinished version I have. For design, balance, weight, spareness, simplicity, and tradition, it is one of my favorites. Savinelli makes this in many different series and their Rossi line has several different ones at various price levels as shape 8404.

My collecting started off with being obsessed with the Stanewll 63M shape,

at the high crest I had 19 of them,

here's a pic from when I had 14...

...as my collecting focus changed I sold most of them but very much enjoyed them when I had them,

the small quiver that I have left are great smokers and I still have a soft spot in my heart for the shape.
This is my favorite and one of the few smooth pipes that I've actually hung on to...

I have 2 Kaywoodie #22's. The relief grain stays at home and the smooth grain goes in my travel bag with a matching #33 apple.

2 MM Diplomats, 2 MM Mark Twains and 2 MM Freehands. The only other duplicate shape pipes I own are from Becker, a Morta Maya desnuda and Strawbwerry Wood by Paulo and one in Olivewood by Federico.

lestrout, I hadn't considered two identical pipes may smoke differently. But, I guess it makes sense since it's an organic product. I've really enjoyed reading about everyone's pipe mates!

The bottom pipe is a tad different in that the bowl is not quite as deep as I thought when I picked it up. Still smokes as good as the other two. Mastro de Pajas.
