Sounds like a Longchamp. A French company that makes fine leather handbags got into pipe making and the pipes were a huge hit with GIs in WWII. Elvis Presley was a big fan of them.
Here's a pic of my Longchamp leather-wrapped billiard.

How do they smoke? I have often wondered how the leather impacted the way briar filters moisture.

Longchamps is indeed the most likely candidate. Some other manufacturers did it as well, such as Hilson. I'm still looking for one, so can't speak as to how they smoke, but I've heard they weren't the best.
Good luck in the hunt. It's usually half the fun ;-)

Could it have been a Ropp ?
Here's one at a reasonable price. Needs some work but looks in good shape

I was in a B&M in Lexington, KY the other day and they had some Savinellis that were leather wrapped.

If I understood it correctly they had a hard time finding high quality briar so the wrapped the pipes in leather to spruce them up. Still a nice looking pipe though.

I never tried one, but I suspect the leather would trap heat, making the pipes hot to smoke. Almost bought one in the 80's, wish I had now, lol.

Yeah the story would point to a longchamp. If you have a chance of getting that pipe it would be a great addition to a collection. I've read about people taking the leather off and they say the briar was of normal quality. I think it was maybe more of a gimmick to sell pipes that looked unique but I sure love the look!
