Another Forum member, Harris (@cigarmaster), identified Red VA's as the culprit of a similar malady, to which you may also be sensitized.

He listed the VA flakes (he favors smoking flakes) that do not has Red VA's & do not cause a reaction:

Virginia Flakes:

Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug

Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake

Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake

Dan Hamborger Veermaster

Dunhill Flake

Astley’s No. 44 Dark Flake

Astley's No. 109

John Aylesbury Luxury Flake

Rotary Navy Cut

Capstan Blue Flake

Brigham Klondike Gold
Virginia/Perique Flakes:

I had always thought that tongue bite was the burning of your tongue when smoking wet tobacco, in that case i have never experienced the bite, but i have burned my tongue many times.

Hextor, I avoid smoking 'wet' tobacco preferring mine more on the dry side of medium.
One thing I have noticed since first posting is that it is usually the first one or two bowls of the day when I occasionally experience tongue 'nip'.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the toothpaste I use. It contains the herb thyme and is called Euthymol.
Regards,
Jay.

It depends on the blend, I like to smoke autum evening when its fresh because it will have more flavor, I have learned to sip on the pipe, that has help me not to burn my tongue.
