It is especially necessary that the rubber tip is tight / stretched hard the beak, so it is almost always necessary to put the small model, otherwise it seems soft.

No thanks. Reminds me of my grandmother's couch with the plastic slip over it (some Italians really do that, sadly).

& plastic runners on the carpet.

I use heat shrink on some of my bits on briars. I don't do anything on my cob bits though.

I have a Savinelli with a marbled bit that I don't do anything to, just because it's so pretty.

I use them on my five field/forest pipes for walking and smoking over hill and dale, in all Northeast seasons. I bought a container of 50 ($20) from EA Carey years ago.

I use them on some pipes and not on others as I mostly don't clench. I don't mind them a bit. As for maintenance, I remove mine periodically so that I can clean off any residue on the stem that has built up along the edge. Other than that, nothing. When a softie bit starts to crack, I replace it.
