I'd skip the codger blends. At the beginning you want the pipe experience to be the best that it can, as many things may get in the way of enjoyment; control what you can, in this case, the tobacco.

The ease of implementation presented by tried and true 'codger' blends make them worth suggesting to the novice.

Their flavor and smokeablility are quite nice.

Carter Hall is my favorite among the OTC blends, followed by Sugar Barrel and Sir Walter (though I'm not sure if Sugar Barrel is available anymore). However, there are so many better, cheaper blends available from blenders out there. If I want a lightly aromatic burley, for example, I would much rather smoke Russ's Classic Burley Kake or Angler's Dream than any OTC.
