Dear , I am not sure of that... looks it's made in factory.
but . I don't understand the use of this thing，maybe to prevent the amber edge from chipping?

Thanks to your encouragement.
after two years, I finally managed to reach a small collection of "old English pipes" .
I read almost every post of Mr Barnes (wishing him all the best in heaven).
And I will try to start a post to show off my small collection (collecting pipes is a lonely hobby in China)...

Just had a new stem made by the current owner of BBB pipes for this 30+ year old pipe.
Slight flat base which I thought was interesting.
