Since my edit window timed out I'll add that if you use a pipe cleaner one time and ditch it you won't have the smelly tobacco goo or residue on your fingers that will ultimately migrate to everything you touch. They are cheap enough to use one end at a time IMO and I hate that smell on my person especially if I'm in a social setting. I see guys double dipping then playing with the cleaner, twisting them into different shapes and such like they are leaving behind a calling card in our smoking lounge. I just refer to them as "stinky fingers joe".
Use your tamper to keep your burn even and not to crush down everything you are trying to maintain. Unless you have packed the bowl too loose and are sucking wind I see no need to apply any pressure to the tamper. If you have packed too loose then by all means, use the tool to tighten it up just so you still have a smooth draw without any whistle.
