The main issue is tha some wood worker, not pipe maker, made a pipe out of that piece and decided to blast it in order to cover the flaw.
Good point about the distinction between woodworker and pipemaker.
Although these pieces look very very nice in some cases, I've often wondered about the build quality and smoking characteristics - not really enough to buy one and investigate though! 8O
The seller has a similar pipe up for sale again this week,

Yuan Fei's pipe,---- unsmoked
There are a variety of different names used for the "brands", Huge Stone being one that I thought was pretty funny, many of the pipes are direct copies of the famous makers, I can understand how they might be tempting, and sometimes sell for $150+
Here's a yummy video I found!

I have found the perfect fountain pen, a sandblast!

Alas, it's a bit too pricey for me.
They do have a very interesting description of the briar roots though!

:P
The Idea of Multitude Specialized Pioneer Insects Shaping Briar Wood Process
"The wood used in this pen is Briar wood. Many other of Platinum pens are also made by Briar wood with different color and smooth and plain surface. But this pen has more dark color with different pattern on the pen. This pen is made from the briar woods roots specially tapered by the living insects and micro-organism naturally."
