If possible, find, or create a new venue. In one of my bands, we had trouble getting gigs in our town (partially to our fans being destructive, but otherwise we were just too heavy for most bars etc.) Another problem we had, particularly in Dallas and Austin was that venue owners wanted a cut of out door money, product sales etc and we would literally have to threaten guns, lawyers and money to get the pay promised us. I realize this has little to do with pipes, but the fact was that if we wanted to keep our ticket/t-shirt/CD money and be able to pay on our own terms we had to make out own venue. At first we made a stage out of a flat-bed trailer got a couple other bands and did our shows for free (plus product sales). It led to an adventurous club owner making us an offer we couldn't refuse.
I guess what I am trying to say is in the DIY world (be it a band or a club) You gotta make your own way when you aren't appreciated elsewhere.
