The amateur scientist / refurbisher in me is dying to experiment with trying a bowl coat. Would it be an outrageous offer on my part to explain to them the significance of the damage and offer to pay $10 for it rather than return it...for experiment sake? Is that rude, haha?

Or I guess, as a better question, what is this pipe worth in this condition? Like I said, I don't want to rip them off...the stem is chewed a bit, and the stamping is nearly buffed off. I'm happy to pay them what seems appropriate. What would you guys say is a fair amount for me to give for this pipe?

The pics changed everything.
That's NOT direct-heat damage, it's a structural crack. It will only worsen over time, and there's no reasonable fix. Sorry.
