My pipes lie in a sleeve in various positions depending on the orientation of the bag in which they reside. I use pipe cleaners immediately after use and usually once after cool down about an hour later. This has always worked well for me. If I were to show my pipes as art pieces I prefer the bowl to be down as it comforts my eyes well.
Bowl down for most, up for bents that don't fit, wherever for beaters and cobs, flat for Falcon/Nylon....If possible I put it stem up because...well that's how the pipe rack is made; also because I was told to do it this way.
