Dry Ice might be something to consider. A small chunk in the bowl while filming might give the illusion of small wisps of smoking coming from the pipe.

Yep, nothing like sucking in dry ice. Dry ice would not do anything unless there was water in the bowl, and then the stem obviously have to be closed. Even with that it would look quite ridiculous what with all of that 'smoke' endlessly pluming out of the bowl. It would look as though the freaking pipe was on fire! Like I said before... hire a real actor who knows how to do his craft and take direction or find someone else.

Anyone seen Robert Downing Jnr. in Sherlock Holmes. Notice that on the 3-4 occassions he smokes a pipe he either just sucks the smoke into his mouth and blows it out or for the distant shots he just blows into the pipe to give the appearance of smoke ... Just a scenario where pipes and actors make a movie.

Also in the Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downing Jnr, notice he was smoking a Churchwardens instead of the typical 'Sherlock Holmes' style pipe?
