One of my other hobbies is growing orchids. I currently have a pretty cool one in bloom, and I thought you guys might like to see it. This one is Cycnoches Swan Cascade, because from the side the flower looks like a swan. It's a hybrid, bred from several different Cycnoches species. The flowers actually bloom upside down, and as many as 30 flowers can bloom on a single spike. Each flower is the size of a baseball.

That's funny Lawrence. I still have not read any Nero Wolfe books. I guess I should someday.

Vinvin, do you know the species that he grows?
Here is another that just finished blooming for me...

I was into orchids for a little while. All epiphytes interest me...I had about 4 species of staghorn ferns for a while...now only one. Do you have a "ghost orchid", Dendrophylax lindenii? It was the last orchid that I tried to obtain before I stopped with the hobby.

I never got to purchase one. The price was never right. Knowing the conditions that they like, I think I could at least keep one alive. I love making terrariums that can self sustain...or need little care.

I envy your ability to grow them, Smoker49. I can't grow anything but seaweed.
But I do know we have some wild Orchids around here. They're tiny and you have to know where to look.
We have

Fairyslippers (Calypso bulbosa)

and Mountain Ladyslippers (Cypripedium montanun).
