Yup. This is why I defend to the death the practice of scientifically testing things that are supposedly obvious - a lot of what's "obviously the case" has turned out to be flat wrong when done under controlled conditions (or, as in your case, after actually asking the person who takes their break in that area what happened...). Sorry you got rolled on this one.
