My wife found this beat up "Black Eagle" at a New Orleans flea market and knew that I loved the tapered-stem bulldog shape. The full write-up is at:

It's not perfect by any stretch, but a nice souvenir from our trip and my wife's thoughtfulness.

Very nice!! That is my favorite bulldog shape. Tapered stems like that fit my clench much better than the saddle bits, and the taper just has cleaner lines, IMO. Nice refurb. The new color makes it look more modern also, IMO. Let us know how it smokes.

Nice job! And a great flea market find. I've never heard of a Black Eagle though.

Thanks guys. It had to be a basket pipe of sorts. I think at some point, someone had a stem made for this. The shank has the markings of what appears to have been a band and the stem needed some shaping to get the angles to line up.

I like the hump in the shank that seems to get echoed in the stem. Little nuances that give the lines of the pipe character appeal to me, like it is taking a breath of air (or smoke). It gives the whole pipe character. I also like it better without a band. I know, I know... the metalsmith guy said what? But, I think that a band would detract from those lines.

Great job as usual, ssjones. A bulldog in a bent is a plus, and the burgundy color always looks awesome. Jewel of a wife!
