We don't have the 'Hatfields & McCoys' mini-series in England, so few people have heard of Devil Anse. Even fewer people in this country have seen a Devil Anse pipe. I was fascinated by those I saw on PM.com and knew that I wanted a Devil Anse, but I was stymied by the fact that there didn't seem to be one pattern - beyond a short stem and capacity bowl. Then I thought "Sod it - I bet Dan Chlebove can design and make one.", so I called Dan. Off he went, a man on a mission. Dan researched the pipe and the different versions, asked me some questions, and came back with his idea. I have virtually no artistic imagination; when Dan called to explain his vision, I just picked up the 'phone and said "Yes" (with apologies to William Shatner). As always, Dan involved me in the making of my pipe, with pictures and commentary, and the result is the beauty below. The favourite in my collection, bar none. Short but with a full-sized bowl, this Devil Anse has superb lines and is extremely good to handle. The thick walls of the bowl keep things cool, while the olive wood band and tortoise-shell mouthpiece add colour and set the whole thing off perfectly. Thank you Dan.
