Which of these two 70's country-rock supergroups was best:
The Band or The Eagles?

I wouldn't put them both in the same category/contest.

I love them both, and refuse to pick one over the other :D

The Band, musically they are far superior to the Eagles. To quote the Big Lebowsky "I hate the Eagles, man".

Well, the Eagles had a really great guitarist from Ohio in Joe Walsh. I find both The Eagles and The Band to be kind of boring today, though, and if I never listen to 'em again, well I suppose I can live with that. Never really liked 'em that much when they popular, either.

Listened to Hotel California a lot as a kid. Can't say as much for any of the Band's records. I listened to a lot more Skynnrd than either one.

I'll toss my vote in for The Band. Honestly, I don't really care for either, but The Band played with Bob Dylan, and that's okay by me.

I don't listen to either one very much, but I don't really care for the Eagles. Only song they ever did that I deliberately listen to is "Lyin' Eyes".

they took Dylan electric

Dylan took himself electric. "Subterranean Homesick Blues", "Like a Rolling Stone", and the famous 1965 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, where his backup band was primarily drawn from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, all happened before his association with The Band.

They had the cojones to open their debut album with a New Orleans funeral dirge - can't get any sweeter than that!

I'll say it was a mutual effort to "get electric" despite it being Dylan's idea to try it in the first place. The "No Direction Home" documentary makes it pretty clear that the '66 tour was a group effort. Dylan may have been initially inspired by pop music and country (he asks, "isn't country music electric?"), but the stuff he would make with The Band was a totally different creature than what was originally intended. The Band (or the guys that would eventually become them) were ON FIRE during that tour. I can't even imagine how incredible seeing Dylan backed by them in 1966 would have been. It was probably the closest thing to a full-blown rock revolution. I read somewhere that it was the first use of power-chords on a guitar before. In 1966!!! THAT'S radical.

The Eagles. Just always appealed to my aesthetic more than The Band. I don't regularly listen to either really but will listen to James Gang records more than a few times a year.

The eagles have benefited the most from 2 different music styles. Rock and Country some would say a cross over band. The Band had a specific sound that didn't get as much air time as they should have in my opinion. its a toss up for me' I cant comment on who would be better in this pick adam12.

I love The Band but can't stand Bob Dylan.
That being said, I think The Eagles have a lot more replay value; I can listen to them anytime, where I gotta be in the mood for the Band.

I think The Band was a "better" and "more important musically" than the Eagles, but the Eagles were huge and had a lot of influence, too. Got to see the Eagles live, but not The Band.
I see some overlap in their music, but don't think they're by any means congruent. But I cannot imagine my college years without both of them. (The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Desperado, Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane . . . all songs I love.)
Let's put it this way: My Pandora mix (which I've been refining for a year) presents me a LOT of both bands.
