Mostly the former. Interesting how the screen writers changed the meaning of the of the original story (Farewell to the Master" from that of a warning to humanity of becoming enslaved by technology to embracing technology in order to save us from ourselves. Things went further awry in 2008 with an awful remake. In today's version Klaatu would threaten to destroy us for our C02 emissions.
Bernard Herman did a great job on the score. It's instantly recognizable.
