Perhaps the most famous woman pipe smoker in modern lore is Mammy Yokum, moral pillar of the comic strip L'il Abner by Al Capp. She was a diminutive mountain woman with what might be called today a Bo-Ho outift -- high boots, striped tights or socks, a skirt and short sleeved blouse and her trademark hat, a sort of black bonnet with a high pointy brim. Her most distinctive single feature was her corncob pipe which was always invariably clenched in her mouth. She was an enforcer for the good and brooked no resistance. For a reminder of this indomitable woman, here is a link. Take a look. A pipe smoker to be remembered.
