Tried hard maple this time. Not much different to carve then brier. No stain just wax. Tried dark alcohol stain on a piece of scrap wood. Didn't turn out very good so went with natural wood. Laminated bands of blood wood and walnut with a silver beauty-ring.

Keep us posted.

Since you have experience....

Do you think that "Iron Wood" would make a good pipe?

I have a block here and have been contemplating using it.

It is well named, because I wouldn't want to drop it on my foot and it IS as hard as iron.

I do have titanium bits.

I think I dulled a rasp trying to make a walking cane handle for my mother from it.

This could take a while.

I like it vkimp. Very distinctive graining on the wood. Natural was the way to go for sure.
On the iron wood, I have heard it is toxic, but I think this means just that you don't want to inhale the very fine sanding dust. Assuming you can actually work it into a pipe shape (fully masked), I assume it could be smoked with no issues. Something to look into, though.
