Valid point about needing a car. I've lived in East Tennessee my entire life, and while I love it in many ways it's very difficult to experience much of if without a car (unless you live in parts of Knoxville, which is urban enough to have mass transit and neighborhoods where you can walk to a store, movie, or bar). But --outside of Knoxville and the Sevier County tourist conglomeration -- it can be a very dull place, especially in the many small towns. Of course, some people really love that laid back sense of nothing much happening, but I'm not one of them.
