I'm looking for some help in dating my Stanwell. I can't seem to find any info on it. I'm going to try to post some pics. If anybody sees this and has any idea as to what year this was made I would really appreciate it. It's a model #11.20240126_113800.jpg20240126_113735.jpg20240126_113709.jpg20240126_113609.jpg20240126_113609.jpg

Welcome from another Illini. There is an intro thread where you write a bit about what you like to smoke, in what, and where you live.

“Made in Denmark” stamp
Later ones are made in Italy after Stanwell closed the Borup factory

This has been a detail that has puzzled me. Did STG also buy the Borup factory when they acquired the Stanwell IP? I know that they got some old stock. And what happened to all of the tooling, unfinished pipes and briar?

Yes it's a Stanwell, lovely Pipe, made in Denmark, not all Stanwell's were made there, just enjoy it, great pipes and I have many of them in my collection, great smokers but not rare and not expensive, just enjoy it.

Thanks for all the responses. This pipe also has the word antique between the Stanwell name and made in Denmark. Does that have any meaning?

I guess I missed the intro page. I am a pipe smoker in IL. I mostly smoke English and Balkan blends. Aro's during the winter months. Starting to like Virginia's in filtered pipes lately. Bought my first pipe about 40 yrs ago. Tried it, didn't like it. Every few years I'd get some tobacco and try again, still didn't like it. I don't really know why I kept it but I did. I met a couple fellow pipe smokers about 3 or 4 yrs ago and found out what I was doing wrong, and now I really enjoy it. Still have my first pipe and smoke it regularly.

No worries: This is the intro thread! A big welcome!

One more bit of house keeping: Please put your location in your Profile.

Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. province, etc.

Only in regards to the finish, which is usually a partial sandblast and a dark reddish stain. I believe the 'antique' finish was a precursor to the 'Vario' line of pipes, as they share some of the same characteristics.

This would put the 'antique' line as existing in the 1970's-1980's, as the 'Vario' line was produced in the early '90's.

Hope that helps.
