Welcome aboard from central North Carolina. I grew up in the Chicago area with the lake and the wind, no Minnesota, but I know what twenty below feels like. At about nine below, you can walk almost anywhere in the city without much worry, from humans. It definitely would cramp outdoor smoking. I wintered over in Milwaukee one winter, about one hundred miles north and maybe ten degrees colder.

North Carolina is, obviously, much milder, but we do have some adventures with unpredicted flash glaze ice storms, and with relatively fewer plows and salt and sand trucks, just because we don't have whole seasons of ice and snow. Usually snow is on the ground two or three times a year, for two or three days.
