I'd love to know how accurate this actually is, but I once read that, prior to 1800, there were more books, broadsheets, and pamphlets published about tobacco (both pro and con, of course) than any other subject -- excepting the Bible and religious education.
Granted, "prior to 1800" is going back quite a way! But it wouldn't surprise me if a good bit of this early material is available electronically.

I love this from the "Pipe and Pouch" collection:
