The filter is installed and is clean. I left the bowl to cool down and relit it. It was much better coming back for some reason. I'l keep on smoking it as long as I don't end up with a burnt tongue and see. In an hour or so I'll fire the Comoy and report back.
Any insight into why it was better when I came back to it after having it cool down?

Not really. Actually the DFK was quite dry (I smoke a tin quite fast so I don't move it to a jar and it only had 2 flakes left).

I can certainly say that both pipes have improved substantially. the Brigham is getting better every smoke! I still have to be careful not to get carried away otherwise it gets too hot. The Comoy has also improved a lot. I can only imagine how they will develop as the cake builds. Thank you so much (all of you) for all your suggestions. I've learned something new and ended up with 2 new pipes!
