I agree with gloucesterman, just know where your tamper and lighter are located. I do it all basically from feel. But depending on traffic/weather conditions, there are times I let the pipe go out and wait to relight it.
That being said, my father smoked a pipe back in the 1950's, including while driving. He was rear-ended and his head hit the steering wheel, shoving the pipe basically down his throat. He never smoked from that day forward.
So, to each his own. :puffy:

The only issue that I have is when I try to smoke while driving in the dark. It takes little effort for me to light and tamp when I can see what I am doing - I never let my attention leave the road. But, it gets dicey at night because it takes more effort to avoid lighting the rim.
I tend not to smoke and drive in the dark.
