Out of curiosity, what did a 100g tin of Frog Morton Cellar go for before they shut down and Ebayers hiked the price? I got into the hobby just right after they shut down...

Nothing increases price value like scarcity. Frog Morton Cellar was outstanding. Now it's sublime.

Cost in the good old days:

$0.05 for a Snicker's or Hershey's bar

$0.10 for a bottle of CocaCola that you could get $.02 back for the bottle

$0.25 for a pack of Camels or Lucky's

$0.10 for a cup of coffee in a diner (often an airstream like or boxcar like bldg.)

$0.10 for Hostess Cupcakes, Moon Pies, SnowCups or RingDings

$0.05 for Juicy Fruit, Wrigley's Spearmint, or Beaman's chewing gum. (Chewing Gum!)

I don't know the good old days, but when I started pipe smoking in 2015 a tin of Dunhill EMP was $6.99, it is $10.65 now.

Didn't we already cover this, Jay?

This does bring a question to my mind.

What did an ounce of tobacco cost in different time periods, and how does that compare to now, after inflation?

I may have an afternoon project!
Edit: I found a thread from here, about two years ago. Of course, JimInks had amazing details!

The old stuff, yeah! Germain's puts out some roach killer they call Balkan Sobranie.
Gas early 1970's: 12¢ a gallon, 15¢ for hi-test.

Movie 1950's: 25¢ for a kid's matinee, candy was 6¢

Coffin nails: when I quit in '83 a pack was 75¢

Swordfish dinner at the Sea Lion restaurant in Malibu in the 1960's: $2.85

In the Fifties, diesel fuel for our shrimp boat, 15cents a gallon, cigs, 15 cents a pack, hourly min wage .75 cents, groceries for an 8 to 10 day shrimping trip, 100$ or under. Comeing in to dock we saved the select crabs to pay for the fuel, sold them for .50 cents a dozen. Cheap yes but you weren't making money. My Father hearing his buddies lament about the good Ole Days, would shake his head and say these are the good Ole Days.

Sable, I know the feeling on the gas & weeds, but I must have been dealing with sharks in the early 70's -- $.30-some a gallon, at least. I do remember gas wars when it got to $.19 back in the 60s where I was, though.
A funny: When I worked for Tinder Box in the 70s we sold Camel regulars for about $.42/pack. People from other stores in the mall would come in & give us a fiver for a pack. They didn't want the nails, just change. Unless it was somebody the boss & I knew & liked, we'd give them a pack & say "Nah, don't worry about it; you can pay me later."
Not one person ever took us up on it. :P
