I cut the heavy slab with a hand saw. I use a cheap drill and drill the holes with cheap bits, one spade bit I ground down to be rounded at the bottom for the bowl. I them put the drill in a vice, put a 5" sanding disk on it and sand away anything that does not look like the pipe the wood is telling me to make, You don't need much! Harbor Freight is our friend! Go for it! What could happen?
I drilled my holes first and smoked a bowl in the block before shaping to make sure it worked. (Shaping takes s couple of hours so I didn't want to waste my time.) The only difference between a block with holes and a finished pipe is the looks. They both work.
Hobie, It's like dancing. It ain't about talent, its about being game! So few are doing it, just by trying, you are in the 99th percentile! All you can lose is a replaceable piece of wood. So get on the dance floor!
