I would agree with Paul The Pipe. These painkillers ARE addictive for quite a number of people. I found that with Oxicontin and coming off them was absolute hell for a few days. I guess the worry is some doctors find it easier to keep prescribing rather than not. Having said that, when you are in constant and debilitating pain, you would do pretty much anything to be free of it.
