Any of you use this ‘vinyl tape’ on amber stems?
Couple of stems of mine are on the way out & looking to preserve them as long as I can.
I dislike & don’t use those short ‘rubber bits’ & am thinking of trying this vinyl tape.
To those who’ve used them, any recommendations on a specific brand to use? Any brands to avoid? Any pros & cons to be aware of?
Thanks in advance of any replies.

What your looking for is silicone tape, and it works very well. I much prefer it to the rubber bits. I use about 4 inches and begin to wrap from the underside of the bit. Wrap tightly. The tape does stretch a lot.
I use black, but I believe it may come in clear as well. Available at any good hardware store.

So far the only downside I have found from taping is that I get discolouration on my vulcanite stems if I leave it on - with amber/horn/acrylic/briar this doesn’t happen. My guess is that it’s due to the difference in UV between the covered section of the stem and the rest. I remedied this by taping my whole stem. This look bad, so I taped the stummel too.

Ok, I’m waffling. With stems with bone tenons, just be mindful that on some pipes you’ll need to tape anticlockwise to avoid unscrewing your stem accidentally.

Have at it guv.
